Paying for a Weight Loss Program versus Developing Your Own

wieght loss cat

Are you interested in losing weight? Whether you would like to improve your health, improve you appearance, or do both, you may be interested in finding a weight loss plan to use. When it comes to weight loss plans, you will find that you have a number of different options. Two of your most common options include paying for a weight loss plan or developing your own.

wieght scaleIf this is your first time attempting to seriously, lose weight, you may be wondering whether you should develop your own weight loss plan, also commonly referred to as a weight loss program, or pay for one. One of the best ways to determine which weight loss plan you should use is to examine the pros and cons of each. A few of the most influential advantages and disadvantages to developing your own weight loss plan, as well as paying for one are outlined below.

When it comes to paying for a weight loss plan or a weight loss program, you will find that you can do so locally or online. If you choose to participate in a local weight loss program or plan, you will likely meet in a centralized location. Many times, you just get together every week or two. There are some weight loss programs where you can exercise onsite though. Should you choose to join an online weight loss program, you will likely have online meetings or discussions with trainers or other weight loss program members, either on a message board or through emails. You should also have access to healthy recipes and easy to do exercises.

One of the many advantages to paying for a weight loss program or a weight loss plan is that you are often given a professional plan. Many times, the individuals or trainers in charge of running these programs have training or firsthand experience with losing weight. This often eliminates trial and error, as many have already learned what works and what does not work with weight loss.

In all honestly, the only downside to paying to join a weight loss program or a weight loss plan is that you have to pay to do so. With that in mind, however, you should be able to find affordable weight loss programs and plans, both locally and online. Although it is not guaranteed, many people find the most affordable help in the form of online weight loss programs or online weight loss plans.

As for developing your own weight loss plan, there are a number of advantages to doing so. One of those advantages is that you can customize your weight loss plan and program to you. For example, if you were allergic to milk, you could work your allergy into your weight loss program, where as a paid weight loss plan or program may not do so. You can also customize your workouts to yourself. This is great if you are obese and unable to follow many workout videos, which seem like they are designed for those who already in perfect, shape.

eat this not this

Another one of the many advantages to developing your own weight loss plan to follow is that it is fun to do. You also have a number of tools at your fingertips. There are a number of websites and magazines that you can get weight loss information from; information that you can use to create your own weight loss plan to follow. Some individuals have said that creating their own weight loss plan to follow makes them more excited about the process and more likely to see the plan all the way through.

The above mentioned factors are just a few of the many that you may want to take into consideration, when trying to determine whether you should develop your own weight loss program or join a paid weight loss program. Many individuals have reported starting their own weight loss program and then later joining a paid one if they didn’t get the results that they were hoping for.

Do expiration dates on a bottle of medication mean anything?

pill-cartoon

WELL WORTH YOUR TIME – PLEASE READ!! Some reassuring and very useful info !

Does the expiration date on a bottle of a medication mean anything? If a bottle of Tylenol, for example, says something like “Do not use after June 2001,” and it is August 2004, should you take the Tylenol? Should you discard it? Can you get hurt if you take it? Will it simply have lost its potency and do you no good? In other words, are drug manufacturers being honest with us when they put an expiration date on their medications, or is the practice of dating just another drug industry scam, to get us to buy new medications when the old ones that purportedly have “expired” are still perfectly good? These are the pressing questions I investigated after my mother-in-law recently said to me, “It doesn’t mean anything,” when I pointed out that the Tylenol she was about to take had “expired” 4 years and a few months ago. I was a bit mocking in my pronouncement — feeling superior that I had noticed the chemical corpse in her cabinet — but she was equally adamant in her reply, and is generally very sage about medical issues.

So I gave her a glass of water with the purportedly “dead” drug, of which she took 2 capsules for a pain in the upper back. About a half hour later she reported the pain seemed to have eased up a bit. I said, “You could be having a placebo effect,” not wanting to simply concede she was right about the drug, and also not actually knowing what I was talking about.

I was just happy to hear that her pain had eased, even before we had our evening cocktails and hot tub dip (we were in “Leisure World,” near

Laguna Beach, California, where the hot tub is bigger than most Manhattan apartments, and “Heaven,” as generally portrayed, would be raucous by comparison).

Upon my return to NYC and high-speed connection, I immediately scoured the medical databases and general literature for the answer to my question about drug expiration labelling. And voila, no sooner than I could say “Screwed again by the pharmaceutical industry,” I had my answer.

Here are the simple facts:

First, the expiration date, required by law in the United States, beginning in 1979, specifies only the date the manufacturer guarantees the full potency and safety of the drug — it does not mean how long the drug is actually “good” or safe to use.

Second, medical authorities uniformly say it is safe to take drugs past their expiration date — no matter how “expired” the drugs purportedly are. Except for possibly the rarest of exceptions, you won’t get hurt and you certainly won’t get killed.

Studies show that expired drugs may lose some of their potency over time, from as little as 5% or less to 50% or more (though usually much less than the latter). Even 10 years after the “expiration date,” most drugs have a good deal of their original potency.

One of the largest studies ever conducted that supports the above points about “expired drug” labelling was done by the US military 15 years ago, according to a feature story in the Wall Street Journal (March 29, 2000), reported by Laurie P. Cohen.

The military was sitting on a $1 billion stockpile of drugs and facing the daunting process of destroying and replacing its supply every 2 to 3 years, so it began a testing program to see if it could extend the life of its inventory.

The testing, conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ultimately covered more than 100 drugs, prescription and over-the-counter.

The results showed, about 90% of them were safe and effective as far as 15 years past their expiration date.

In light of these results, a former director of the testing program, Francis Flaherty, said he concluded that expiration dates put on by manufacturers typically have no bearing on whether a drug is usable for longer.

Mr. Flaherty noted that a drug maker is required to prove only that a drug is still good on whatever expiration date the company chooses to set. The expiration date doesn’t mean, or even suggest, that the drug will stop being effective after that, nor that it will become harmful.

“Manufacturers put expiration dates on for marketing, rather than scientific, reasons, ” said Mr. Flaherty, a pharmacist at the FDA until his retirement in 1999.

” It’s not profitable for them to have products on a shelf for 10 years. They want turnover.”

The FDA cautioned there isn’t enough evidence from the program, which is weighted toward drugs used during combat, to conclude most drugs in consumers’ medicine cabinets are potent beyond the expiration date.

Joel Davis, however, a former FDA expiration-date compliance chief, said that with a handful of exceptions — notably nitroglycerin, insulin, and some liquid antibiotics — most drugs are probably as durable as those the agency has tested for the military.

“Most drugs degrade very slowly,” he said. “In all likelihood, you can take a product you have at home and keep it for many years.” Consider aspirin. Bayer AG puts 2-year or 3-year dates on aspirin and says that it should be discarded after that.

However, Chris Allen, a vice president at the Bayer unit that makes aspirin, said the dating is “pretty conservative”; when Bayer has tested 4-year-old aspirin, it remained 100% effective, he said. So why doesn’t Bayer set a 4-year expiration date? Because the company often changes packaging, and it undertakes “continuous improvement programs,”

Mr. Allen said. Each change triggers a need for more expiration-date testing, and testing each time for a 4-year life would be impractical. Bayer has never tested aspirin beyond 4 years, Mr. Allen said. But Jens Carstensen has.

Dr. Carstensen, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin’s pharmacy school, who wrote what is considered the main text on drug stability, said,

“I did a study of different aspirins, and after 5 years, Bayer was still excellent”.

Aspirin, if made correctly, is very stable.

Okay, I concede. My mother-in-law was right, once again.

And I was wrong, once again, and with a wiseacre attitude to boot. Sorry mom.

Now I think I’ll take a swig of the 10-year dead package of Alka Seltzer in my medicine chest to ease the nausea I’m feeling from calculating how many billions of dollars the pharmaceutical industry bilks out of unknowing consumers every year who discard perfectly good drugs and buy new ones because they trust the industry’s “expiration date labelling.”

The importance of drinking water…when and how much.

We frequently hear, without details, “Drink plenty of water, the body needs it.”   – DRINK WATER, we need lots. But the question is when. There are many discussions as to when to drink the water.  Should I drink water before eating? After eating? Before going to bed? After exercise or during exercise? Water intake helps flush the toxins out of your body, but the time is also important.

A cardiac specialist tells us the correct times to drink water:

  • 2 glasses of water after waking up – helps activate internal organs
  • 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal – helps digestion
  • 1 glass of water before taking a bath – helps lower blood pressure
  • 1 glass of water before going to bed – avoids stroke or heart attack

Why do people need to urinate so much at night time? A Cardiac Doctor tells us that gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright, causing swollen legs. When you lie down the lower part of our body (legs and etc) seeks a level with the kidneys, making it easier to remove the water.

  • When you get night time leg cramps, your leg muscles are telling you they need hydration. Their messenger is the infamous Charlie Horse.

Masaru Emoto wrote several books regarding his research in water.  Four of his books in no particular order are: 1)The Hidden Messages in Water, 2)The True Power of Water, 3) The Secret Life of Water and 4)The Miracle of Water

.water muscle manIn his writings he discusses the purity and healing abilities of water.  We have read numerous articles and research on this topic. He has pretty amazing information.

People are buying “Pure” water but in fact it is not a solution, we need alkaline water.  After getting ill and searching for answers, we discovered Jupiter Ionized Water.

From their site, they write:

“Drinking processed (tap) water was never nature’s intention. Natural drinking water has the pH to help keep the human body’s pH levels balanced. The body’s ph level should remain 7.5 to feel good and healthy. It is due to our modern food and drinks and their processing methods that we have an imbalance in our body’s acidic levels. From this we conclude that the drinking of unfiltered tap water could result in serious health problems.”

Protect your Health the Natural Way

My husband and I began using, then selling Nutronix products several years ago. They conformed with our personal value of products being natural and pure.  Silver Solution was one of these products. Many locations use and promote silver but Silver Solution products use a patented process that keeps the silver suspended in the liquid so that it does not settle or filter down to the bottom. The following is from their web page.

…*Modern science now explains why ancient practices were effective; it also shows that even in modern-times, silver has many uses that may support our healthy well-being.* Numerous tests at major universities and commercial lab have been conducted. *

A question often asked is: Does The New Silver Solution® Harm The Helpful Bacteria in Our Intestines?

This is an important question because some products can wipe out friendly bacteria that inhabit our large intestines.* These friendly bacteria not only produce B vitamins and folic acid for you, but they support healthy immune function.* The New Silver Solution® does not present such a problem.* Independent studies  have effectively shown this that the silver does not kill these helpful, probiotic bacteria.*  Below is a comparison between SilverSol and Ionic Silver.

Dear ,

What if you lived in a world where viruses, bacteria and germs — the causes of many diseases — were no longer an immediate threat to you?

What if you never had to experience the horror of receiving a doctor’s chilling diagnosis that the medicine usually prescribed for your illness is no longer effective — or watch helplessly as someone you care about suffers from a virus, bacteria or germ or some other life-threatening disease — with you not being able to do anything about it?

What would you be willing to give to ensure that you and your loved ones would never need to suffer — or die — from so-called “super bugs” that cause diseases that are actually preventable?

Imagine never having to worry about dying from a pandemic flu — or suffering from an MRSA infection, an eye infection, bronchitis or a pathogenic disease — and any other serious disease caused by bugs, viruses, molds, germs or bacteria, for that matter.

What if you no longer had to live in fear that one day you’ll develop a viral disease that doctors have not yet “discovered” a new treatment that isn’t resistant to the mutated viral strain that you have aquired?

And what if you had a solution (which costs are negligible) that could bring you back to health in the event that you actually acquired one?

I know, I know. You’re probably thinking, “That just can’t be true! How could one simple solution possibly solve so many health challenges? Well, you have every reason to be skeptical. I know I was.

But if you can suspend your disbelief for a moment — you’re about to learn more about the most amazing health solution that anyone could ever possess.

Your life — or the life of your loved ones, especially your children — could very well depend on this information.

And remember, the New Silver Solution is available NOW. You don’t have to wait for the medical world to “discover” a new treatment for the latest superbug because a simple, safe and effective alternative already exists.

Kind Regards,

Environmental Food choices that Grandma made

barrel fruit

This may seem like a strange title but we tend to concentrate on food being good for us and not being concerned about the impact on the planet.  We see destruction as a loss of one type of farming but for some reason, we do not connect it to the food we eat.

Areas of the region where I live once had such an abundance of fruits and vegetables that we had regular summer outings to go there to pick quantities for Mom to preserve for the winter. Part of the joy was picking and eating fruit right off the tree. This changed when commercial corporations stepped it. Remembering a childhood and its memories is about as far as people’s thoughts go. It is time to face the bleak reality of sprawled out buildings, huge greenhouses and massive housing developments all in feeding a lifestyle of convenience. It is time to face truth.

Instead of complaining and waiting for others to make a change to save the planet, take steps yourself. Here are seven ways to make easy lifestyle adjustments that will help make a big difference.

  • Buy Locally: Go to your local farmers’ market to select product that has not been hot housed or imported.  This means adjusted your pattern of meal preparation. Support businesses that use local and healthy products.
  • Switch to Organic. While most people think of organic food as “pure” food for the body and nothing else. Pure food is difficult to attain. However, selecting foods with this label minimizes air pollutants and replenishes natural soil nutrients.
  • Bring your Own Grocery Bags. Grandma did long before plastic bags began polluting garbage dumps.  Why can’t we return to this practice?paper plastic bags
  • Say No to Disposable Utensils, have a picnic. Once more we return to Grandma’s family. She had a picnic basket that went with the family whenever they ate out.  Enjoying a takeout doesn’t mean you have to accept the Styrofoam boxes, plastic utensils and wooden chopsticks that come with it; use your own takeaway container and cutlery. Most restaurants will be happy to use your containers and save their dollars.kitty bag
  • Use alkaline water bottles. In a couple of weeks I will be writing about the benefits of alkaline water, easily prepared at home. By purchasing reusable drink containers, you can refill them when desired. You can store them in the car or at work, so they’re easy to grab when you need them.
  • Get Creative with LeftoversInstead of throwing out small segments of last night’s dinner, mention this to your family and neighbors and suggest a contest of who was more creative or who utilized the most. For example..Have half a loaf of old bread? Make French toast, blend it into breadcrumbs or use it to thicken soup. There’s a lot you can do with leftovers if you think creatively.
  • Start a Vegetable Garden in the Spring: We all have the memory of pulling a carrot out of the ground, washing it under the hose and eating it with joy. You can start a garden, however small to get that taste again. Most communities have Co-op gardens, windowsills provide a small select harvest.  Food & Beverage 0290

The above tips aren’t hard to carry out but they do involve changing lifestyle habits that you are accustomed to. In doing so, you’re not just being green you’re also supporting a local community, saving money, taking better care of your health and setting a good example for the next generation and those reasons are worth changing for.

Cholesterol and you

Your Cholesterolexercise 2

Many articles have been published about cholesterol levels and the importance to our health, so much so that some people dismiss its importance. Putting the information into just one more format, may help your understanding and help you discover ways to manage it.

Cholesterol is a natural fatty substance in our body needed to build new cells and regulate certain body functions. We can thank our liver for all the work it does producing our cholesterol, but it cannot always do it alone.  We need to assist this organ by watching what we eat. When production is not managed, we get in trouble; risking heart disease, stroke and circulation problems. If it is “good” cholesterol, we are OK. If not, we need to take action. What is the difference?

“Good” and “bad” cholesterol         HDL LDL

We need to understand the two types— high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which is “good”, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is “bad”. Bad cholesterol stays in your bloodstream and builds up on the walls of your arteries, eventually restricting the blood flow. Good cholesterol, however, helps to maintain healthy blood flow by lowering the risks of build up.

Am I at risk?

junkfood

There are no proven symptoms but if you have a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease, if you smoke or have diabetes or high blood pressure pay more attention to this aspect of your health. One website I looked at suggested getting a baseline test when you are around 20 years old, then check every five years. Other factors include your diet, lifestyle, medical conditions and the types of medications you are taking.

How to test cholesterol levels:  This is as simple blood test called a Lipid Profile.  If your cholesterol levels are higher than are ideal, discuss your options with your doctor.

Ways to reduce bad cholesterol

jumping-jacksRegardless of whether you are at risk or not, aim at lowering bad cholesterol through lifestyle changes. Changing your diet and lifestyle can make a big difference. Some steps you should consider taking are:

  • Losing weight to achieve a healthy Body Mass Index
  • Eating a low-fat diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Consuming less salt and sugar
  • Exercising at least 30 minutes a day
  • Quitting smoking and limiting your drinking

For some, this is not an easy task. In such cases, it is necessary to take medication on top of such changes. There are several different medications prescribed for controlling cholesterol, some of which can be used in tandem.

Niacin, or Vitamin B3, encourages the production of good cholesterol while helping to block that of bad cholesterol when taken at high dosages of 1,000 to 2,000 mg daily. It is readily available without a prescription, although it is always best to talk to your doctor first.

To sum up, the key to keeping your cholesterol levels healthy is being self-aware and disciplined. If you know you might be at risk, make the effort to go for a screening and embark on a healthy diet and lifestyle. In this way, you can keep your heart and blood vessels working at peak performance for a very long time.
